For the first time in the history of the local Jewish community, a joint body representative of all the local synagogues and religious schools, under the leadership of rabbis of reform, conservative and orthodox temples and board members of the institutions, has been formed here to supervise kashruth.

At a mass meeting at Congregation Poaley Tzedeck, called to inform the Jews of Syracuse about kashruth conditions obtaining in the city, speeches were delivered by Rabbi Shabtzie Baum of Albany, chief supervisor of kashruth in New York State; Professor T. Aaron Levy of Syracuse University; David Holstein, president of the Welfare Board of Charities, and the spiritual leaders of various local congregations.

Jews have resided in Verdun since the twelfth century.
