Because of pressure from the pro-Hitler paper, Estis, the performance of Stefan Zweig’s play, “The Flesh of the Poor,” was withdrawn from the National Theater after it had played for several performances. M. Kyrou, editor of the paper, is a prominent member of the National Theater’s committee and is believed to have demanded the cessation of the performance of the play on no other grounds than Zweig’s Jewishness. The Estis, which has become pro-Hitler during the past few months, has been advocating National-Socialist methods in Greek political and social life.
The closing of the show was vigorously attacked by the Socialist paper, Anexartitos. The paper points out that the Nazi rulers of Germany are not proud of having eliminated Jewish intellectuals, replacing a Zweig with pornographic Hans Evers, and a Max Reinhardt by a non-entity such as Grupus.
