The National Council for Civic Liberties, a non-partisan body fighting encroachments on civil rights, has announced that it will fight attempts made to foment racial prejudice for political ends. The Council stated that it will resist the sinister attack on the civil rights of “our Jewish fellow citizens.”
References have been made at public meetings, a resolution adapted by the society states, to “the sweepings of the foreign ghettos.” It has also been stated that “the organized power of Jewry in the racial quarrel had consistently striven for the last eighteen months in favor of war. Directly and indirectly, they had striven in favor of the feelings and passions for war with the nation which we made peace with in 1918.”
The resolution states that it is clearly false to suggest that either Gentile or Jewish protest against Hitler excesses were inspired by militarist motives or international hatred.
“Irresponsible utterances,” the resolution declares, “such as are being made that suggest the organization of anti-racial feeling might well result in persecution, particularly in time of panic or emergency.”
