U.s.-german Barter Deal Nears Ashcan

White House by the State Department with a list of the points under fire by the department, including the contention that the deal might endanger the entire reciprocal trade agreement program now being developed by Mr. Hull.

The President’s action in sending the pact back to Peek is regarded as significant in that it apparently voices approval of the Secretary of State’s position.

Samuel Untermyer, anti – Nazi boycott leader, took strong exception several weeks ago to the projected deal, asserting that the harm done to American manufacturers by acceptance of German goods would exceed the benefits to Southern cotton producers from a reduction in the surplus of that commodity.
