Among numerous papers read at the annual meeting of the American Academy for Jewish Research, held at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America yesterday, were three on the works of Moses Maimonides, in compensation of the approaching 800th anniversary of the birth of the great philosopher.
In cooperation with the Emergency Aid Committee for Displaced German Scholars the Academy has invited Professor Guido Kisch of Halle to act as research fellow for 1935. Professor Kisch has accepted, it was announced yesterday, and will arrive here next month.
Professors Ralph Marcus and Shalom Stiegel, both of the Jewish Institue of Religion, were elected fellows of the Academy.
Professor Harry A. Wolfson of Harvard University was elected president of the Academy. Other new officers are Professor Isaac Husic of the University of Pennsylvania, vice-president; Professor Salo W. Baron of Columbia University, corresponding secretary; Dr. Leo Jung of New York, recording secretary, and William Gresser of New York, treasurer.
On the executive committee for 1935 are Professor Z. Diesendruck of Hebrew Union College, Dr. Louis Epstein of Boston, Professors Louis Ginzberg and Alexander Marx of the Jewish Theological Seminary, Dr. Louis I, Newman of New York, Professor Solomon Zeitlin of Dropsie College, and Dr. Julius Morganstern, president of Hebrew Union College.
At the afternoon session papers were read by Drs. Harry Blumberg, Boaz Cohen, Julian Morganstern and Alexander Sperber. The title of a paper by Professor Ralph Marcus, who was unable to be present, was announced.
At the evening meeting, which was given over to a tribute to Maimonides, papers were read by Professors Z. Diesendruck and Louis Finkelstein, and Drs. Solomon Gandz and Israel Elsenbein.
