Prevent Inauguration of Municipal Council

A strike of all Jewish aldermen in the newly-elected Jerusalem municipality body today prevented the official inauguration of the municipal council, which was scheduled to take place this morning in the presence of the High Commissioner of Palestine.

The aldermen’s strike was due to the difference of opinion among the Jews on the appointment of a Jewish vice mayor for Jerusalem. The Palestine government has appointed Daniel Auster, a Jewish councilman, as vice mayor, but leading Jewish organizations expressed today their dissatisfaction with the fact that Mr. Auster was appointed without consultation with the representative Jewish bodies. It was added that the organizations would prefer to see the councillor Haim Solomon as vice mayor rather than Mr. Auster.

The crisis in the municipality may assume an even more serious character in view of the fact that of the six Jewish aldermen only three side with Solomon. These three indicated today that they will not participate in the municipality if the government-ap-
