The Nazi ambitions to convert Danzig into a second Saar so that it may eventually rejoin Germany today assumed a concrete character when the majority of the Danzig Senate, consisting of Nazi members, officially applied for the dissolution of the Danzig parliament and for new parliamentary elections.
The new elections, which will probably take place on April 7, are expected to result in a victory for the Nazis and may eventually bring the status of the Danzig Jews to the same as that of the Jews in the Saar.
The Jewish population in Danzig has long been terrorized by the Nazis, even before they became a majority in the Danzig Senate. Sean Lester, the High Commissioner appointed by the League of Nations for the Free State of Danzig, has done little to curb the openly anti-Jewish activities in Danzig. The propaganda against the Jews has been conducted in Danzig by means of leaflets, posters, the Nazi press and even by private business enterprises.
Danzig Jews are awaiting with fear the expected anti-Semitic Nazi propaganda which will appear in connection with the forthcoming new elections. Hundreds of Jewish families will be compelled to move from Danzig if the elections should turn the Free City over entirely into the hands of the Nazis.
