Another milestone in the philanthropic history of American Jewry will be reached with the formal observance here of the twentieth anniversary of the Leo N. Levi Memorial Hospital of Hot Springs at a banquet to be held in the Arlington Hotel on Monday, February 25. Notables from all over the United States, headed by Alfred M. Cohen, president of B’nai B’rith, and Governor Fuetrell, will be in attendance.
This celebration will mark the completion of two decades of service by this strictly non-sectarian, national, charitable institution. Non-paying patients have been admitted within its portals in the twenty years it has been serving the nation. More than 68,000 men, women and children have been cared for since 1914 in its wards and clinics.
The hospital consists of a fireproof main building, four stories in the center and three in the wings; a three-story nurses’ home and the one-story Charles Steinberg Clinic, given by Louis Steinberg of St. Louis in memory of his father.
In the main building is a fully equipped bathhouse, where patients may be treated with Hot Springs’ famous curative waters; the Emma Silberman Mendal Solarium for Children, the Metzger Children’s Ward and the beautiful Gus and Irene Strauss Memorial Chapel.
The hospital specializes in the treatment of rheumatic diseases and is provided with the thermal baths which are of special benefit in the treatment of such ailments.
Judge A. B. Frey of St. Louis, president of the hospital association, will be toastmaster at the banquet. Other officers of the hospital are Mose Klyman, vice-president; Dave Burgauer, treasurer, and Rabbi A. B. Rhine, secretary, all of Hot Springs.
NEW YORKER ON COMMITTEE
The executive committee consists of Dr. Samuel Adams Cohen of New York City, Karol A. Korngold of St. Louis, Leo Lehman of Pittsburgh, Dr. Maurice Smith of Los Angeles, Rabbi F. L. Rosenthal of Columbus, Ga.; Dr. Harry Kraus of Chicago and J. K. Hexter of Dallas, and the officers. Mose Klyman of Hot Springs is chairman of the local board of managers.
Rabbis Rosenthal and Rhine were the two men who originally conceived the idea of building this hospital in Hot Springs and were members of the original board of incorporators with past presidents Charles J. Hease of Memphis, Tenn.; Emith Nathan of St. Louis and Archibald A. Marx of New Orleans.
The Leo N. Levi Memorial Hospital is supported by contributions from B’nai B’rith, welfare organizations all over the United States and individuals. The annual budget is about $75,000.
