Two Jewish women went on a hunger strike today in the Bethlehem prison in protest against being held without trial as illegal immigrants.
One of the strikers, Miss Fannie Katz, has been in jail for four months. The other, Miss Margalit Reichfeld, has been there seven months. Both have been pleading for a trial but so far have not been granted one. The police have refused to release them under bail.
Meanwhile severe criticism is voiced in the Palestine press today against central Jewish organizations for failing to raise bail for the Jewish prisoners who are still being kept in Acre Jail on charges of illegally entering Palestine.
The leading Palestine paper, Haaretz, declares that the 100 prisoners, who went on a four-day hunger strike in order that they might be released under bail, have practically struck for nothing. Having won their strike when the government agreed to set them free under a $500 bond for each prisoner, they are still in the same Acre prison, simply because the central Jewish organizations in Palestine have not fulfilled their duties in obtaining the required bail.
