Welfare Board to Hear Kaplan on Unity Aims

Attainment of a united Jewish community will be the central theme of a discussion to be led by Professor Mordecai M. Kaplan at the afternoon session of the annual meeting of the Council of the Jewish Welfare Board today (Sunday) at the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, Ninety-second street and Lexington avenue, Judge Irving Lehman, president of the board, announced Friday.

The other participants in the symposium will be Judge Morris E. Barison of Jersey City, N. J.; Rabbi Philip Bookstaber, Harrisburg, Pa.; Morris Einson, president of the Community Center, Yonkers; Max Grant, president of the Federation of Jewish Charities, Providence, R. I.; and Harry J. Applestein, president of the Y. M. W. H. A., Pittsburgh.

At the opening session, in the morning, reports will be rendered by Judge Lehman, Dr. Cyrus Adler and Benjamin J. Buttenwieser, on the activities carried on by the Jewish Welfare Board and the progress made in the past year by its 300 constituted societies, including Y. M. H. A.’s, Y. W. H. A.’s and community centers.

In the afternoon a panel discussion on the place of youth in the Jewish community will be held, in which young people will participate and Harry L. Glucksman will act as discussion leader.

A plan for the reorganization of the state and regional federations of Y. M. H. A.’s and Jewish centers will be presented by M. Maldwin Fertig, president of the Metropolitan League of Jewish Community Associations. It will be discussed by the heads of the other regional organizations.

A conference on trends in the educational activities of the Jewish center, as they affect the child, the adolescent and the adult, will be held Monday.

Among the speakers will be Dr. F. Ernest Johnson, professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University; Dr. Delos S. Otis, educational advisor of the New York State Emergency Relief Administration; Dr. Mordecal Soltes; Dr. Frank Astor of the Bureau of Child Guidance; Louis Kraft; Miss Judith Horowitz; E. J. Londow; Herman Jacobs; Harry Friedgut; Harry Lebau and Harry L. Glucksman.
