Organization of a state-wide campaign in Texas on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal is nearing completion, according to word received at national headquarters here. Co-chairmen for the state are J. K. Hexter of Dallas, Tobias Sakowitz of Houston and Jake Karotkin of San Antonio, with George A. Levy as executive director.
Several leading Jewish communities of Texas are already participating in the drive. Among them are Galveston, which is being led # I. H. Kempner, and El Paso, of which the chairman is Maurice Schwartz.
Dallas will begin a campaign April 21 under the leadership of Louis Tobian and I. D. Geeteh, cochairmen. Fred F. Florence is treasurer. Waco will begin its drive on the same day with A. M. Goldstein as chairman. In San Antonio the campaign, which is headed by Gilbert Lang, Sid Katz, Morris Stern and J. D. Oppenheimer, will be launched April 29. Houston is also preparing a campaign.
In Tyler a drive is now in progress, of which B. Wadel and Mrs. A. Golenternek are co-chairmen, I. Rudman vice-chairman and Max Krumholz treasurer. Rabbis Aron Moskowitz and David B. Alpert are on the advisory committee.
Many adjacent smaller communities are participating in the campaigns of the cities mentioned.
RABBIS MEET TONIGHT TO MAP APPEAL AID
Rabbis of more than 100 conservative, orthodox and reform congregations of greater New York will attend a conference at Hotel Commodore tonight, to discuss the present plight of Jews in Germany and Eastern Europe, and to consider plans for assisting them, it was announced yesterday by I. Edwin Goldwasser, co-chairman, with Michael Schaap and Nathan Straus, of the Greater New York Campaign of the United Jewish Appeal.
The United Jewish Appeal is endeavoring to raise $1,250,000 as this city’s share of a national quota of $3,250,000, for assistance to German Jewry and other lands, and for settlement of Jews in Palestine. Judge Otto A. Rosalsky will be the principal speaker at the conference.
Jewish leaders of the Bronx proceed with the organization of a committee of one hundred to direct that borough’s participation in the drive, Mr. Goldwasser also announced. These plans were made at a luncheon held at the Hotel Commodore Friday at which #braham Krasne, food merchant, was elected Bronx chairman.
