A demonstration in front of the Jewish Community offices here was staged yesterday by Chassidim, followers of the Gerer Rebbe, in protest against a number of rabbis who lent their signatures to an appeal for the Jewish National Fund.
The Chassidim, who are opposed to Zionism, demanded that the rabbis withdraw their signatures. They also distributed leaflets in which they stated that “a shameful deed has been committed in Israel.”
The demonstrators attempted to attack Rabbi Posner who was on duty in the Jewish Community offices. A number of Mizrachi youths defended the rabbi until police arrived and dispersed the demonstrators.
