meat retailers, but against the “big four” packers who, they charge, are doing their best to “jack up” prices. The three wholesale distributors in New York are the United Beef Company, the Wilson Packing House and the Swift Company.
At last night’s meeting of the meat retailers sentiment was expressed that the consumers had compelled them to do what they should have done themselves, namely, to force wholesale prices down by a general strike. It was indicated that after the consumers’ boycott is ended, the kosher butchers may continue an independent strike.
Indications that the strike is spreading to the poultry industry were given yesterday by Abraham Belsky, president, and Sol Obrentz, secretary, of the Retail Poultry Dealers Association of the Bronx. Both said that the strike was affecting kosher poultry sales in the Bronx.
Belsky criticized Mayor LaGuardia for permitting women to picket retail establishments which remained open in the face of the strike. He charged that pickets were going into kosher meat shops and dragging out prospective customers.
Taking cognizance of the shipments of kosher meat into the New York market from Canada, the Agudath Harabonim, a local organization of rabbis, declared an issur (rabbinical ban) on Canadian meat in a conference at the Broadway Central Hotel.
