Newark is Set to Open Drive for U.j. Appeal

A united Jewish community is represented on the list of officers that heads the United Jewish Appeal in this city which is to be inaugurated with a preliminary function on Thursday evening when Paul Baerwald and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, national co-chairmen of the overseas relief and rehabilitation campaign, will be the guest speakers.

Louis Bamberger, noted philanthropist, and Mayor Meyer C. Ellenstein of Newark are the honorary chairmen of the local campaign which seeks to obtain $50,000 as its quota toward the national goal of $3,250,000 for the relief and rehabilitation of the Jews of Germany and other lands and for the settlement of Jews in Palestine.

Jacob L. Newman, former City Prosecutor, is chairman of the fundraising effort. The associate chairmen are: Albert Hollander, Samuel I. Kessler, Samuel F. Leber, Aaron Levinstone and Samuel Schechner. Joseph Stern is treasurer; Charles Manshel, chairman of the initial gifts committee; Michael A. Stavitsky, chairman of the executive committee.

Arthur C. Lindenman will head the men’s division of the drive and Mrs. Jack F. Meyer the women’s division. Mrs. Felix Fuld is honorary chairman of the women’s division. Miss Sophya Sultzbach is chairman of the junior division. Mrs. Leah Frank Segal is secretary of the campaign committee and David E. Bernstein head of the speakers’ bureau. Morris Scheck will supervise the publicity committee.

Associated with Mrs. Meyer in the leadership of the women’s division are: Mrs. Leo M. Abrahams, Mrs. Meyer Kussy, Mrs. Julius M. Meirick, Mrs. Arthur L. Myers, Mrs. Harry Berkowitz, Mrs. Julius Flink, Mrs. Nathan Kussy, Mrs. Richard Lowy and Mrs. Fred Newmark.

Newark’s effort to obtain $50,000 will be carried on in cooperation with other towns in Essex County including Essex Falls, Livingston, Roseland, the Oranges, Irvington, Verona, Millburn, Maplewood, Belleville, Nutley, North and West Caldwell, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Cedar Grove.
