A pogrom atmosphere today pervaded Berlin as a result of the severe anti-Jewish speech delivered at Essen yesterday by the Reichs Propaganda Minister Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, in the course of which he warned that “the next few weeks will show what we are going to do to them.”
Yesterday all Berlin was placarded with rabid anti-Semitic Stuermer posters. On Kurfuerstendamm where the anti-Jewish riots took place on July 15, uniformed Storm Troopers last night conducted a demonstration, parading back and forth and shouting menacing anti-Jewish slogans.
Never before has Propaganda Minister Goebbels delivered a more vitriolic and inciting anti-Jewish harangue than at yesterday’s large meeting in Essen. Commemorating the tenth anniversary of the founding of the National Socialist movement in the Ruhr District.
“No foreign protest will prevent Germany from annihilating the Jew, who is the enemy of the German State,” Goebbels declared. Revealing for the first time that intermarriage between “Aryans” and Jews will officially no longer be tolerated, he said, “We shall not get tired of making it clear to the German people how dangerous this international race is.” He also branded Jews as “the jackals of German economic life.”
Speaking in similar vein Reichminister Rust declared at Essen, and Reichminister Frank at Cologne that the government will not compromise on its present racial policy, and that no let-up can be expected until Jews will have been eliminated completely from German life.
For issuing a plea for mercy for the Jews, the Evangelical Church in Berlin was today severely attacked in an editorial on
the front page of the Voelkischer Beobachter, Hitler’s personal organ. “Now in the third year of the National Socialist regime,” says the editorial. “No one should fool himself by hoping for better treatment of the Jews.”
Total isolation of the Jewish population is reported from a number of German cities. Commenting on this, Deutsche Justiz, organ of the Ministry of Justice, says “The world may consider this isolation an act of the middle ages, but municipal councils who are deciding to isolate the Jews are only acting in accordance with our ultimate aim to prevent the bastardization of the German nation.”
In Dresden all Jewish shops have been placarded with anti-Jewish boycott slogans. Public benches in all streets and parks now have signs painted on them reading, “Jews prohibited to sit here.”
Last night Storm Troopers under the supervision of Nazi officers demonstrated on the Kurfuerstendamm for an hour. The Storm Troopers arrived in buses and picketed the cafes patronized by Jews. However, they did not attack anyone physically, contenting themselves merely with shouting abusive slogans at the Jews.
So frightened were the Jewish patrons in the cafes at the time that they fled terror-stricken from the section. The cafes on the Kurfuerstendamm were emptied of Jews within a few minutes. Today all day Jews abstained from appearing in public places.
The Ministry of Justice today issued a decree making it mandatory for employes of the Justice Ministry who intend to marry to first have their brides approved by the Ministry. Prospective bride-grooms must submit a complete biography of their brides together with a geneological record proving that they are of “Aryan” ancestry.
Addressing a huge crowd at a sports display, the mayor of Westerland today declared that Jews are not wanted in the town, and that he hopes they will take the warning and leave. Other-wise, the mayor said, he will be forced to issue the ultimatum “Juda, we are giving you twenty-four hours to clear out of Westerland.”
At the Deutsch-Krone beach all “verboten” signs also bear the inscription “This is a German bathing resort–Jews are not desired here.”
