No little surprise was evoked here today when the Voelkischer Beobachter of Munich appeared with an announcement by the Nazi Minister of Education that the Jovan Cvijic Medal for geographic research was conferred by the Belgrade Geographical Society of Yugoslavia on Prof. Alfred Philipson, foremost German-Jewish geographer who was dismissed from the Bonn University when the Nazis came to power.
In making the announcement the Ministry of Education points out that Prof. Philipson was the recipient two years ago of the Richthofen gold medal of the German Geographical Society.
Professor Philipson is noted not only as a teacher of geography, but also as a lecturer on scientific subjects, and especially as a writer on the geography of southern Europe and the Mediterranean coast.
The Jovan Cvijic Medal bears the name of the Yugoslavian geographer and universally recognized authority on the Balkans.
