Led by Grand Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Koretz and his son, firemen succeeded in saving the synagogues in a fire which today destroyed many Jewish houses and shops in Castoria, a Jewish quarter of Salonica.

One of the synagogues was used as a temporary shelter for men, women and children made homeless by the fire.
