Outspoken anti-Semitic speeches were made tonight at the mass meeting called by the Reichspost, generally regarded as the mouthpiece of the Vatican in Central Europe, to protest against alleged Jewish infringement of Catholic rights in Palestine. The meeting was attended by about 350 persons.
A statement by Dr. Czermak that “we cannot allow the Jews either in Vienna or Palestine to do as they like,” aroused a storm of applause.
A plea for the preservation of Catholic rights in Palestine was voiced by Cardinal Innitzer, who declared that “we do not desire to attack anyone, but our rights ought not to be violated.”
General Commissar for the Holy Land, the Franciscan Father Piringer, declared that the Catholics have a new enemy “who wishes to take everything from us, even the holy places.”
