Starting February 1 and until further notice no applications for certificates permitting Palestine residents to bring relatives into the country will be received by the Jewish Agency for Palestine, it was announced by the Agency today. Exceptions will be made in the case of persons with relatives in Germany, Yemen and Russia, the announcement stated.
This development follows closely on reports that the Palestine Government was planning new curbs on immigration. The contemplated curbs would invalidate immigration certificates if not used within a specified time, double the $5,000 minimum necessary for entry under the capitalist category, increase the tourist deposit to $400 and restrict entry of Palestine citizens’ relatives.
It was announced yesterday that the Government had promised the Agency that before drafting any ordinance curbing immigration it would consult with that body’s Executive.
