Great Britain’s intention to proceed with plans for a legislative council, as disclosed by the Earl of Plymouth in the House of Lords Wednesday, is the subject of bitter comment in the Hebrew newspapers today. Editorials point out that the controversy is not between the Jews and the Arabs, but between the Jews and the Government.
The influential daily, Haaretz, comments as follows on Lord Plymouth’s statement:
“We need our own place in the sun. We will never agree to a minority status, which would make it hardly worth while for our immigrants to spend their money to come here.”
Lord Plymouth, replying to a barrage of criticism of the legislative council plan in the House of Lords, declared that any indication that the Government intended to postpone its pledges to establish a council would “seriously shake Palestine’s confidence” in the Government and would lead to serious unrest.
