With one eye cocked toward the well-organized citrus industry in Palestine, French officials in Syria today were seeking to organize Syrian orange and lemon growers in order to put citrus exports on a more satisfactory basis.
Palestine’s citrus industry, in a comparatively few years, has reached the point where it exports around eight million cases a year, Syria’s much older citrus industry only exports about 300,000 cases.
The Department of Agriculture here is now insisting on the proper care of trees, spraying against fruit blights and other factors which lower the quality of the produce and are seeking to improve the quality of the Syrian orange.
All cases of fruit destined for shipment abroad are now being examined and improperly graded and packed fruit is being rejected.
