Two more Jews died today of wounds received in yesterday’s Jaffa-Tel Aviv border clashes between Arabs and Jews, bringing the total Jewish dead since the rioting began Sunday to seventeen.
The most reliable estimate of Jewish wounded places the number at seventy. Total Arab dead is reported at four, with about fifty wounded.
STABBED BY ARABS WITHIN SIGHT OF POLICE
A Yemenite Jew named Shlomo Garbi was stabbed by five Arabs less than twenty meters from a police guard. He had been approaching his shop in the Nevei Shalon quarter of Jaffa.
Israel Schnitzer, 16 years old, was wounded by British policemen in a clash between Arabs and Jews. A Jew named Hadad was gravely wounded.
Hadassah hospital reported seven others seriously injured.
Meanwhile, Zvi Tannenberg, one of the two Jews wounded in a hold-up by Arab brigands at Tul Karem last Wednesday, died today. The holdup indirectly led to this week’s disorders since the rioting arose from the Arab assumption that the slaying of two Arab leaders Friday night had been a reprisal for the hold-up, in which another Jew, Israel Chazan, was killed.
TENSION HIGH; 50 JERUSALEM JEWS ARRESTED
Meanwhile tension throughout the country increased today when it was learned that at midnight tonight Arab leaders will formally proclaim a nationwide general strike. Rumors that disturbances in Jerusalem are being planned for Friday, the Moslem Sabbath, added to the general unrest.
Fifty Jews were arrested here allegedly for preparing to defend themselves in the event rioting breaks out. Three Arabs arrested on similar charges were later released.
The police were registering British volunteers for emergency service.
With a detachment of Cameron Highlanders patrolling Jaffa, an Arab demonstration planned for this afternoon failed to materialize. Anticipating the call to a general strike, Arabs in Nablus, Tulkarem, Jenin, Safed and Beisan stopped all activities today. The port city of Haifa was only slightly affected, activities continuing nearly normal.
Fires continued to throw a garish light over the Jaffa-Tel Aviv border, at least two Jewish house in the Shapiro quarter of Jaffa, just a few blocks from the city line, still burning at this report. The fires were set by Arabs.
Haboker, influential Tel Aviv daily published by Vice-Mayor Rokach, publishes an extra today in which it reports that Arab firemen in Jaffa are aiding the rioters by setting fire to Jewish homes.
The same paper gives eyewitness reports that Arab policemen in Jaffa are failing to protect Jews, on the contrary arresting several for alleged attacks against Arabs. Those arrested are now being held in the Jaffa jail.
6 ARABS ARRESTED IN JAFFA FOR INCITEMENT
At the same time, it was reported from Jaffa that six Arab agitators were arrested in that predominantly Arab city for urging Arab crowds to march on the bordering all-Jewish city of Tel Aviv.
Police halted the Skelton Jewish bus service between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Only a few Arab buses covered the route.
District Commissioner James E. Campbell assured a Jewish delegation today that adequate police forces were on hand to meet all contingencies, adding that all was quiet. He promised, however, to increase police patrols in commercial sections and remote quarters of Jaffa and Tel Aviv.
He denied that Hebron Jews had evacuated after declaration of the Arab strike and advised the Jews not to close their shops.
