Army engineers preparing to demolish a condemned quarter of Jaffa for construction of two roads to the harbor were faced with an obstacle in the person of a 90-year-old synagogue beadle.

Ordered to evacuate his synagogue, the aged “shamos” refused to budge, declaring he was prepared to die in sanctity under the ruins of the house of worship he was duty-bound to care for.
