Three United States senators sailed yesterday on the Rex to make an unofficial survey of Jewish accomplishments in Palestine. They are Royal S. Copeland of New York, Warren R. Austin of Vermont and Daniel O. Hastings of Delaware.
Explaining the reason for the trip, Senator Copeland said:
“Palestine has problems of immigration and relief which we should know about first hand in Washington. We know that conditions for the Jews in certain European countries are difficult, and that there will be great waves of immigration to relieve that unfortunate state.
“America may be called upon to help meet that immigration problem.”
Senator Copeland said that eighteen years ago the late Nathan Straus invited him to make a health survey of Palestine, but “I never found time until now.” He added that “all three of us feel that Palestine as the religious center of the world is worthy of the consideration of all nations; and there is much we want to investigate besides health.”
