The Executive Council of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States today adopted a resolution declaring that American Jews “are more than willing to fight in defense of our country or its democratic principles.”
The resolution is specifically aimed at one recently passed by the Central Conference of American Rabbis calling on the Federal government to exempt from military service Jews who have religious scruples against war participation.
The veterans’ declaration says that “Jews in general do not subscribe to pacificism” and seeks to eradicate the “impression” that military service is in contravention of Jewish teaching and ideals.”
The resolution will be submitted for action by the annual national convention of the Jewish veterans at Pittsburgh on Labor Day.
