Handel’s majestic oratorio, “Judas Maccabaeus, “has been “Aryanized,” newspapers reported today, by the Nazi poet Herman Burte working under the order of the Ministry of Propaganda and Enlightenment, and the new text is entitled, “Hero and Peace.”
The Catholic newspaper Germania protested against the “mutilation” of the oratorio, declaring:
“Is the figure of Judas Maccabaeus only a matter of the Jewish people? Is not this figure a clear example of sincere religious heroism which should be shown to all human beings?”
