NEW YORK (Nov. 3)
Denying he had ever assailed Jews, as reported in recent newspaper headlines, Father Coughlin told newspaper reporters in an interview yesterday that his National Union for Social Justice will some day “protect the minority Jews.”
Admitting however, that he had been correctly quoted as “challenging” Jews to abandon the “eye for an eye” philosophy, he added:
“Someday the Jews will be glad to have me here to protect them from the Hitler philosophy in Washington today. When they need help they will find the National Union for Social Justice ready to protect the minority Jews.”
Father Coughlin displayed a telegram from Bishop Gallagher of Detroit denying he had said, as reported yesterday, that after the election no priests in his diocese would be permitted to engage in politics.
