British troops today engaged Arab bands in a sharp two-hour skirmish near Nablus, the first clash between Arabs and the military since cessation more than a month ago of the six-month Arab general strike against Jewish immigration and the Government. The number of casualties could not be ascertained.
The engagement opened when a large Arab band attacked a military car near Nablus. A wireless from the besieged car brought reinforcements.
Large bodies of troops proceeded today to Nablus to engage in field maneuvers and to pursue newly organized Arab bands which have been conducting extensive marauding activities against both Jewish and Arab settlements.
The Associated Press reported from Jerusalem today that the market area was tense after battling between Christians and Moslems in which fists and sticks flew yesterday.
The disorders were an aftermath of Moslems picketing Christian shops, apparently following the example of similar clashes recently in Beirut, Syria, the dispatch declared.
