German newspapers expressed concern today over plans announced in New York for a boycott of the heavyweight championship bout between Jim Braddock, American titleholder, and Max Schmeling of Germany, the challenger.
An editorial in the Frankfurter Zeitung appealed to America not to forget her “fair play” ideals.
Pointing out that previous Schmeling fights in the United States had not been boycotted, the newspaper concluded:
“It is hardly believable that Americans with their strong sports traditions will follow shadowy political slogans and discriminate against the German challenger.”
