TEL AVIV, Palestine (Jan. 25)
Secret police agents launched today an intensive campaign to investigate a “buy-Palestine” movement in an effort to ascertain whether forcible methods were being employed in its promotion.
The agents visited Jewish stores which advertise sale of “Palestine goods only” to inquire whether the proprietors had voluntarily joined the movement (known in Hebrew as “tozereth haaretz,” literally home industry) or had done so under pressure.
At the same time, street peddlers selling only Palestine products were hustled off to police stations to explain why they preferred to limit their wares to those made in the Holy Land.
Inquiries as to the reason for the police campaign brought the reply that it was the result of a general order to watch the activities of both Jewish and Arab boycott organizations.
