Figures issued by the Government, giving the first up-to-date motor car survey, show 15,000 vehicles were registered in the Holy Land at the end of 1936, most of them of American makes. About 1,500 cars were registered last year, 2000 less than in 1935.
Vehicles in use, however, total only 9,000, of which 40 per cent were private cars, 25 per cent commercial vehicles, 10 per cent auto buses and the rest taxicabs and motorcycles.
There are 719 Fords, 558 Chevrolets, 147 Buicks, 122 Oldsmobiles, 139 Willys among the American makes. British cars include 372 Morris, 326 Austins, 114 Hillmans and other brands. There are also 179 Fiats and 134 Opels.
