The first of a series of trials arising from the pogrom here last week resulted today in sentencing of two peasants to jail terms of six months each. More than 100 persons are being held for trial for participation in the excesses, for looting or receiving stolen goods.
Both of those convicted admitted participating in the rioting explaining they had acted on receipt of printed slips of paper instructing them to “attack the Jews.”
Apparently suffering shock as the result of the disorders, a Jewish woman named Sarah Reinman, recently returned from Palestine, committed suicide by drowning herself in the river.
The authorities, in an effort to prevent photographing of buildings destroyed during the pogrom, confiscated all film stocks.
Jewish merchants who suffered least in the disorders are contributing generously to the relief of some 22,000 Jews directly or indirectly effected.
