By a close margin, the House today defeated an amendment to the $1,500,000 relief bill which would have excluded aliens from relief. The amendment was introduced by Rep. Fritz G. Lanham (Dem., Texas) and defeated by a vote of 112-116 after a stormy debate.
Rep. Leon Sacks, Jewish member from Pennsylvania, had offered another amendment extending relief to aliens who signified their intention of becoming citizens, but withdrew it after the failure of the Lanham amendment.
