General Jan C. Smuts today urged “more support than ever” for the Jewish national home in Palestine as “the best outlet for oppressed refugees from other countries.”

In a message to the Jewish National Fund campaign the South African Minister of Justice declared:

“We all wish most sincerely that the forthcoming report of the Royal Commission will bring about appeasement in Palestine without any derogation of the mandate and the Jewish national home, which remains one of the outstanding settlements of the peace treaty.

“Not only South African Zionists but South Africans generally cherish the ideal embodied in that great international instrument and will continue to give unwavering support to it.

“In proportion to their means South Africans will continue to support the policy which has become all the more necessary as immigration to other countries is being restricted and Palestine affords the best outlet for oppressed refugees from other countries.

“The troubles of these times constitute a new, powerful argument in favor of Jewish settlement in the national home and that policy calls for more support than ever before.”
