London Court Jails Anti-semitic Orator

John Penfold, 46-year-old auctioneer, was sentenced to two months at hard labor today and bound over to be on good behavior for a year for using insulting words against the Jews from a public platform.

Penfold had alleged that Jewish brides were examined by a rabbi before marriage. A crowd listening to him shouted: “Get him down: It’s wrong:” Police prevented possible disorder.

In Old Street Police Court the magistrate declared of the defendant:

“He intends to continue until he attains his object, which is to curtail the liberties of a section of the people. I have no alternative but to sentence him.”
