Mufti “fled” to Syria, Wedgwood Tells Commons

The trip to Damascus taken by the Palestine Grand Mufti, Haj Amin el Husseini, stirred a debate in Commons today on what his status was a Moslem religious functionary when he left Jerusalem.

Since he had vacated his post, Col. Wedgwood asserted, the Mufti was no longer entitled to be called His Eminence as a sign of courtesy. The Mufti receives a salary from the Palestine Government as head of the Moslem council, but is also active politically as head of the Arab High Committee, in which position he is now opposing the partition of Palestine.
