A REBUKE TO ANTI-SEMITISM BY IRISH VOTERS APPEARED TODAY TO HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE RESULTS OF THE FREE STATE ELECTIONS.

DESPITE VIGOROUS ANTI-SEMITIC PROPAGANDA, THE JEWISH DEPUTY ROBERT BRISCOE WAS RE-ELECTED TO THE DAIL EIREANN. MR. BRISCOE, WHO IS KEENLY INTERESTED IN JEWISH COMMUNAL AND RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS, IS A PERSONAL FRIEND OF PRESIDENT EAMON DE VALERA, AND ACCOMPANIED HIM ON HIS TRIP TO AMERICA.

DEPUTY PATRICK BELTIN, AN ANTI-SEMITE WHO WAS ATTEMPTING TO HAVE SHECHITA, JEWISH RITUAL MEAT-SLAUGHTERING, PROHIBITED IN IRELAND, WAS DEFEATED.

A NUMBER OF NEW DEPUTIES WERE ELECTED WHO ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR FRIENDLINESS TO THE JEWS, INCLUDING DR. JOSEPH HANNIGAN AND JAMES LARKIN, LABOR LEADER WHO WAS AT ONE TIME SECRETARY OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY IN THE UNITED STATES, LATER ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY THERE, AND WHO HELPED ORGANIZE JEWISH TRADE UNIONS IN AMERICA.

DURING THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN MINISTER OF FINANCE SEAN MCENTEE WAS CHALLENGED TO MAKE A PUBLIC STATEMENT ON GOVERNMENT POLICY TOWARD THE JEWS. MR. MCENTEE STRENUOUSLY DENOUNCED JEW-BAITING AND DECLARED THE POLICY OF THE FIANNA FAIL, THE DE VALERA PARTY, WAS TO TREAT ALL CITIZENS ALIKE, IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR RELIGION OR RACE.

THE SECRETARY OF THE OPPOSITION PARTY LED BY FORMER PRESIDENT WILLIAM T. COSGRAVE, MADE A SIMILAR STATEMENT TO THE JEWISH TELEGRAPHIC Agency.
