American Minorities Body Protests Economic Bias, “ghetto” Benches in Poland

ECONOMIC DISCRIMINATIONS, POLITICAL REPRESSIONS AND EDUCATIONAL RESTRICTIONS AGAINST JEWS IN POLAND WERE PROTESTED TODAY BY THE AMERICAN COMMITTEE ON RELIGIOUS RIGHTS AND MINORITIES, NON-SECTARIAN GROUP OF NOTABLES IN PUBLIC LIFE, OF WHICH DR. ARTHUR J. BROWN IS HONORARY CHAIRMAN.

IN A STATEMENT DEPLORING RECENT ACTS OF VIOLENCE, THE COMMITTEE MAKES A STRONG APPEAL TO THE HEADS OF THE POLISH GOVERNMENT, AND ESPECIALLY TO THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS OF THE COUNTRY, IN BEHALF OF HUMANITY AND THE IDEAL OF FAIR PLAY TO ALL RACES AND CREEDS. THE STATEMENT, CITING THE VARIOUS FORMS OF ANTI-JEWISH DISCRIMINATIONS AND THEIR DISASTROUS EFFECTS ON POLAND’S POPULATION OF 3,500,000 JEWS, DECLARES:

“WE EARNESTLY APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE OF POLAND TO PUT A STOP TO THE ANTI-SEMITIC MOVEMENT WITHIN THE NATION AND TO REVIEW THEIR POSITION IN REGARD TO MEASURES TO BE TAKEN FOR THE AMELIORATION OF ECONOMIC CONDITIONS. THE ECONOMIC POSITION OF POLAND IS NOT MATERIALLY DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF SEVERAL OF THE NATIONS BY WHICH SHE IS SURROUNDED.”

THE STATEMENT ALSO APPEALS TO OTHER GOVERNMENTS AND THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS TO HELP POLAND IN “PROVIDING OUTLETS FOR ITS SURPLUS POPULATION.” IT ADDS: “THE INCREASING PRESSURE OF THAT SURPLUS UPON THE ECONOMIC LIFE OF A PEOPLE IN A LIMITED TERRITORY, AND THE RIGID IMMIGRATION LAWS OF COUNTRIES TO WHICH EMIGRANTS WOULD NORMALLY GO, CREATE A PROBLEM WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE OF SOLUTION BY THE GOVERNMENT DIRECTLY CONCERNED AND WHICH INEVITABLY BREEDS LOCAL DISTURBANCES AND INTERNATIONAL ILL WILL. BUT IT IS NEITHER JUST NOR HUMANE TO SEEK A SOLUTION by persecuting Jews.”
