The Journal British Australia and New Zealand today urged large-scale settlement of Jews in Australia as a means of guarding unsettled land against Japanese land hunger.
“It would be wise to remember that these having reason to value British friendship here than any other would be keener on holding the empire inviolate against any possible enemies than other people of non-British blood that elsewhere could be found,” the periodical said.
Pointing out that the need to occupy unsettled territory in Australia was greater than ever while the difficulty of getting Britons had increased, the paper said Australia had neither people nor money to inaugurate large-scale settlement while “the Jews have both.”
Nothing has been done regarding Jewish settlement since Israel Zangwill approached the Australian Government twenty years ago, the paper declares, and much has happened since then to make Australia more desirable for the Jews and the Jews more acceptable to the Commonwealth.
