The Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities met today to consider steps to combat a Nazi campaign for a constitutional amendment “to regulate the legal status of the Jews in Switzerland.”

The Swiss National Front, Nazi organization, has announced its intention to seek a referendum on the amendment. The petition requires a minimum of 50,000 signatures, while the membership of the National Front does not exceed 10,000 Rolf Henne, leader of the Nazi group since 1934 recently resigned.

Jewish leaders expressed the belief that the move for a referendum had little chance for success, since a proposal for a change in the Constitution requires majority approval in Parliament and the sanction of 13 of Switzerland’s 25 cantons. There are an estimated 20,000 Jews in Switzerland.
