Austrian Jews breathed more freely today after Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg’s speech to the Federal Diet in which he stressed a free and independent Austria, its full sovereignty recognized by Chancellor Hitler.

The unexpectedly strong address went far to dispel the anxiety hanging over the Jews during the past fortnight. Big crowds assembled in Jewish quarters to hear the speech from loudspeakers. They thunderously applauded Schuschnigg’s declaration that Austria would preserve her independence and the freedom of her citizens, and a reference to the opportunity of small minorities of different ethnical origins residing in Austria for happiness.
