Overwhelming sentiment among American Jewish religious leaders against the proposed partition of Palestine is reported by the London Jewish Chronicle, based on first results of a survey of Jewish leaders on the question.
More than 450 rabbis and heads of religious organizations were polled by Louis Rittenberg, the London weekly’s American correspondent. Of the 103 who have replied to date, 87 opposed partition, six favored it with reservations and ten were listed as “wholeheartedly in favor.”
The final results of the poll, Mr. Rittenberg said, will also include national and local leaders, since the opinions of 400 non-religious Jewish leaders have been solicited. The poll “may be said to reflect a cross section of representative Jewish opinion in America,” Mr. Rittenberg declared.
The Chronicle, in polling Jewish leaders, made known its own editorial attitude on partition. It declared that crystallization of opinion against partition in America might be “the compelling impetus to the continuance of the mandate.”
