Opening an Austrian press exhibit at the Vienna Museum of Art and Industry, Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg today reiterated that the principle of equality of rights remains unchanged in Austria and declared that equal treatment will be accorded to all. The Chancellor added that sincere pacification of the country was a necessary corollary of the Austro-German pact.
The press exhibition itself shows that the Jews of Austria realize they must use restraint and modesty in claiming equal rights. Though practically the entire Austrian press is represented, including religious papers, the entire Jewish press of ten weeklies and monthlies is not participating. The only Jewish note is provided by missionary papers.
It was learned that the authorities have warned the Volksruf, new anti-Semitic newspaper and organ of the anti-Semite Bund, against publication of articles inciting against Jews. Suspension was threatened for failure to comply.
Despite the anti-Semite Bund’s denial of dissension, it has been ascertained that the split in the anti-Semitic organization is widening and that a special anti-Semitic league will be founded by the Nazis.
The Lower Austria Board of Education has overruled an order by the leader of the Jungvolk, official Austrian youth organization from which Jews are barred, on wearing of organization badges at schools. The board ruled that only school and patriotic insignia may be worn at school. The Jungvolk order remains in effect in all other provinces of Austria.
