A Jewish auxiliary policeman (ghaffir) was killed and another injured today when a band of Arabs attacked a crew of fifteen Jewish workers paving roads in the woods on Mt. Carmel near Haifa.
The party fought its way through the ambuscade to its camp, carrying the body of Mordecai Ber, the dead policeman, and Lichtenstein, the injured one. Ber, 22 years old and unmarried, had come to Palestine from Germany two-and-a-half years ago. The crew had been working under the protection of the two policemen and four watchmen.
Two British soldiers were slightly injured when a military trolley car preceding a train was derailed near Tulkarem. Investigation disclosed a powerful mine and two bombs. Arabs discovered tearing up rails near Lydda were driven off by a watchman, and a big dynamite charge was discovered under a nearby bridge.
According to the Hebrew daily, Haaretz, a band of twenty Arabs invaded the home of a wealthy Arab at Migdal Zedek near Ramleh, and, when their demand for money was refused, locked the Arab’s family in the house and set fire to it. Jewish auxiliary policemen from nearby quarries rushed to rescue the family, the account said, while the assailants fled and Arabs of the village would not lend assistance.
