The fate of some 800 to 1,000 Jewish refugees, mostly from Germany, who overstayed temporary visas was finally decided yesterday when President Getulio Vargas issued a decree allowing foreigners who are in the country illegally 120 days to appear before immigration officials and have their immigration papers recorded.
The permission to remain in Brazil was granted, it was understood, after an appeal by the American Association in behalf of the illegal immigrants. Previously it had been believed that they would be deported. The law also prohibits drug addicts and mentally and physically deficient persons from entering Brazil.
