Prof. Norman Bentwich, honorary director of the Council for German Jewry, disclosed here today that Mayor Neubacher has pledged municipal support to Jewish schools for retraining of prospective emigrants. Jewish leaders are considerably encouraged by the Mayor’s attitude.
Prof. Bentwich also revealed that land near Vienna has been offered to the Jewish Community to be used for elementary agricultural training. In addition, a local factory has been proffered for training of several hundred Jews in manual trades.
Pending foundation of the retraining school here, probably more than 2,000 Jewish youths will be sent to various Reichsvertretung training centers in Germany.
Apart from emigration activity, the Jewish Community needs a monthly minimum of $100,000, it was stated, half of which is for immediate emergency expenses connected with the present situation. It is impossible to draft an emigration budget as long as it is not known how many people can be sent out.
The Palestine Office is anxiously waiting for 200 certificates promised by the Council for German Jewry. Arrival of the certificates is bound to raise the morale of thousands waiting for weeks for actual constructive steps in their behalf.
The Gestapo today made public the names of eight Jews, mostly Zionists, it has appointed as an advisory council on all matters pertaining to Austrian Jewry. They are: Dr. Leo Landau, for welfare; Dr. Leopold Plaschkes, for taxes; Dr. Isidor Klaber, for schools; Drs. Rosenberg and Steinfeld, for worship; Dr. Ronstein, for culture; Sigmund Bondy, for synagogues and Dr. Ignaz Koerner, for emigration and sports.
