Denouncing “the glorification of violence and the resurgence of racial and religious intolerance,” a national committee of prominent persons and organizations has announced formation of a non-partisan organization to be known as “National Rededication,” to conduct a campaign for liberty and democracy.
Hermann Hagedorn is acting director, former Secretary of the Interior James A. Garfield acting chairman, Victor C. Ridder, treasurer, and a national committee is in formation. Among the members of the committee are Rabbi David de Sola Pool, Roger S. Straus, Mrs. Arthur Hays Sulzberger, Richard E. Byrd, Herbert Hoover, Alfred M. Landon, Owen D. Young and Norman Thomas. Among the sponsoring organizations are the Jewish Welfare Board, the National Conference of Jews and Christians, the American Federation of Labor and the Young Men’s Christian Association.
“Liberty has been destroyed in many of the leading nations,” a statement by the sponsors said. “Openly or secretly, alien revolutionary forces are seeking the overthrow of free governments. The glorification of violence and the resurgence of racial and religious intolerance are everywhere endangering democracy. The only answer to militant autocracy is a democracy, informed, united, revitalized and aflame.”
The organization intends to carry on its campaign through the press, radio, churches schools, motion pictures and other channels.
