A Jew and five Arabs were killed today and an undetermined number of persons were wounded, as bands concentrated their attacks in northern Palestine, where the Government is building a barbed-wire barricade along the frontier to halt infiltration of terrorists from Syria.
A large band, evading a police watch, extensively damaged a long stretch of the fence. Troops pursued and engaged the band, killing two and wounding several of them. Later, a band of hundreds attacked and damaged the fence along a ten-kilometer stretch, heavily firing on a Jewish fence workers’ camp for an hour. The tents were riddled with bullets, but auxiliary police held off the attackers.
A Jewish armored car patrolling the north road along the fence was halted by a barricade near Biram and fired on. Trying to break through the obstruction, the car overturned. A band of seventy fired point blank at the vehicle and threw bombs at it. One bomb entered the car, but was thrown out. The crew of five resisted desperately for an hour. Auxiliary policeman Michael Entin was seriously wounded and the driver was slightly injured. Reinforcements with machine guns drove off the attackers. Meanwhile, the fence was damaged at several points between Saassa and Kedesh Naphtali.
A band of 200 attacked Arab workers employed on a building project at Saassa. Three workers were killed, and the rest were severely beaten. The work was discontinued because of the threat of a renewed attack.
Yesterday, an Argentine-born Jewish settler, Herzl Aloni, 21 years old, was shot dead by Arabs who attacked him while he was on duty as a watchman in the fields at the Kfar Ezekiel colony. Aloni and another watchman, both of whom were mounted, were fired upon at close range.
The Palestine subcommittee of the Zionist General Council met all day yesterday, debating a report submitted by Moshe Shertok, head of the political department, regarding and Menachem M. Ussishkin participated in the debate.
