The British Government has “no evidence” that Italy and the Reich are in any way responsible for the current widespread disorders in Palestine, Colonial Secretary Malcolm MacDonald told the House of Commons tonight. The question was raised by John McGovern, Independent Laborite, who asked whether MacDonald would say how much of the unrest was “traceable to the activities of Mussolini and Hitler.”
Reporting to the Commons on measures being taken by the Government to restore order, the Colonial Secretary said 240 men had been landed at Haifa with 20 officers from the battle cruiser Repulse. “The first battalion of the Irish Guards arrived in Palestine yesterday,” he continued, “and the first battalion of the Essex Regiment is due today. The first squadron of Hussars, an armored car regiment, arrives in Palestine tomorrow, and the other two squadrons are due the following day.
A strong movement has been started among pro-Zionist Members of Parliament to reconciliate the Zionists with the Zionist-Revisionists, who split away from the World Zionist Organization in 1933, The Scotsman reported today. The move is being made in view of critical conditions in Palestine and increasing persecution of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe, the paper said.
