One Jew was killed today and five others were injured as Arab terrorism continued, marked by attacks on a Jewish colony, the destruction of a railway station and further incendiarism in Haifa.
Amazia Cohen, 29, was fatally wounded, and Ephraim Melamed, 28, was seriously injured in two heavy assaults on the Ramat Yochanan colony, named for Justice Minister Jan Smuts of South Africa, near Haifa. The attacks were repelled by special policemen. The colony, which was founded seven years ago by the Shomer Hatzair, labor Zionist youth organization, has 200 settlers, including 30 from America, most of whom are from Detroit.
Jews evacuating the mixed Ardil Yahud quarter of Haifa continued to be the target of stone attacks by Arabs, who also set fire to two Jewish homes. Two Jews, Joshua Schwartz and Joshua Cohen, sustained injuries in the fires, while a third, Itzhak ben Moshe, was seriously wounded when stoned. A 15-year-old German-Jewish youth was critically hurt when struck by an iron bar.
Death Threats posted by Arab terrorists on the Great Mosque against Arabs breaking the general strike forced several merchants to close their stores after attempts to open them.
Fire set by terrorists completely destroyed the Kalkilliah railway station, Government property, and four passenger coaches. The station had been frequently the target of Arab attacks and there have been many wrecks in the vicinity during the two year disorders.
